About Rabbi Marwick

Congregation Shomrei Emunah is both pleased and proud to announce the appointment of Rabbi Binyamin Marwick as its Interim Rav for 5770.

Rabbi Marwick grew up in Silver Spring, where he attended the Hebrew Academy of Greater Washington.  After graduating high school, he learned at Yeshivat Kerem B’Yavneh and the Chevron Yeshiva in Israel and then attended Ner Israel Rabbinical College, where he earned his Bachelor in Talmudic Law and Master in Talmudic Law degrees. He is also working on a doctorate in Talmudic law at Ner Israel, which he hopes to complete in the coming year. His dissertation is called Dikduk Liv’nei Yeshiva: Revitalizing the Teaching of Biblical Hebrew Grammar in Yeshiva Day Schools.  He received his Rav U’Manhig certification and his Yoreh Yoreh Smicha ordination from Ner Israel.

Rabbi Marwick trained for several years with the Baltimore’s Beis Din L’Inyonei Ishus, concentrating on hilchos gittin.  He has had additional training in hilchos nidda with Rav Yaakov Hopfer and hilchos kashrus through the Star-K.

He received his Masters of Science degree in education and a certificate in school administration from Johns Hopkins University, and he passed the CPA exam in Delaware.

Rabbi Marwick has been teaching Jewish History and Biblical Hebrew grammar at Ner Israel’s Beren High School (Mechina) since 2003 and has had administrative responsibilities there, working as an intern to Mr. Jacob Shuchman.  He has also worked as a rabbinic intern with Rabbi Hauer at Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion, where he taught daily shiurim on Toldos Am Yisrael and halacha and provided rabbinic coverage when Rabbi Hauer was away.

Since 2007, Rabbi and Dr. Marwick have served as the Directors of the Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus (JLIC) at Johns Hopkins University.  JLIC is a national program sponsored by the Orthodox Union. In this capacity, Rabbi Marwick serves as rabbi for the Orthodox JHU students, faculty and staff.  He and his wife have become outstanding national examples of success for this program, as reflected in conversations with OU leadership.  They have earned the respect and devotion of not only the students at JHU, but also the university administrators and the Hillel staff on campus.

In his role at Hopkins, Rabbi Marwick offers several weekly shiurim on a variety of topics and levels (including gemara b’iyun and a bekius shiur in which he focuses on learning methodology), learns individually with campus community members and offers counsel and guidance.  He is also responsible for overseeing campus kashrus and the Orthodox minyan. One of his significant achievements was the construction of an eruv to include a large portion of the Homewood area, including the JHU campus and adjacent neighborhoods. He has prepared and led chaburos on various shas topics both at Ner Israel and JHU.  His weekly shiurim at JHU also include parshas hashavuah, Jewish philosophy (including kisvei Rav Kook and Rambam’s 13 ikkarim), and halacha.

Rabbi Marwick’s wife, Dr. Miriam Marwick, serves as the co-director of JLIC at JHU.  She earned her Masters and PhD degrees in electrical and computer engineering at Johns Hopkins University and a Judaic Studies teacher’s degree from the Rika Breuer Teachers Seminary.  She has been a popular instructor at Baltimore’s Maalot Institute and a teaching assistant in the Electronics Design Lab of the Department of Engineering at JHU.  In addition to her JLIC responsibilities, she is a postdoctoral fellow at Hopkins.  She has authored and co-authored a number of articles in her area of study.

The Marwicks have four children:  Moshe, Chana, Aliza, and Avraham.

Please join us in welcoming the Marwick family into our extended Shomrei Emunah Congregation family.
